Modern air forces use a variety of equipment to enhance the capability of their aircrafts. Two major force-multiplier platforms used by the IAF are its fleets of Flight Air Refuelling aircrafts and Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS). The Flight Air Refuelling aircrafts enhance the range of the fighter aircrafts for deep strike into enemy’s hinterland, in addition to a host of other tasks. The AWACS provide the fighters with relevant data about enemy aircrafts in the air, far deeper than ground based radars can provide.
Currently, in addition to our holdings of AWACS procured from abroad, an Indian system on an Embraer aircraft has been produced by the DRDO: NETRA Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system.
Brig SK Chatterji,(Retd) Editor, Bharatshakti.in discusses the details with Air Cmdre SP Singh (Retd). The Air Cmdre is a fighter pilot with over 3,000 hours of flying experience. He is also a strategic analyst and a commentator.
