Podcast: Indian Armed Forces: Medium & Heavy Lift Helicopters

Helicopters are used for a variety of functions in the battlefield, and logistics is but one of them. Helicopters for logistics functions, though they can also be used in multiple roles, are classified according to their load-carrying capacities. We have the indigenous Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) that have lighter carriage capacities and have been extremely successful in all types of terrain configurations. Our mainstay, however, remains the Mil MI 17 V5 and the MI 26 Russian helicopters. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the manufacturers of ALH are also pursuing a medium-lift helicopter project to replace the Russian machines. Brig SK Chatterji (Retd), Editor Bharatshakti.in discusses the details of various models available with the Indian Armed Forces with Lt Gen BS Pawar (Retd). The General is an aviator of repute and was the Director-General of Army Aviation. Currently, he is the President of, Northern Region, Helicopter Society of India.
