Trincomalee did not have major engagements, however the port facility in Trincomalee and the fact of the area lying astride the main axis that linked southern Sri Lanka with Jaffna to the north, made it strategically important an area to hold and dominate. The mix of Tamil and Sinhala populace also made Trincomalee a tinder box. In addition, a flare-up between the Indian and Sri Lankan garrisons led to tensions mounting for a considerable period of time. The guests for the episode are:- Maj Gen Pankaj Saxena (Retd). He was commissioned in 4 ASSAM. He has extensive experience in insurgency affected areas as also Siachin. During Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka he operated in Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vavunia and Jaffna sectors. He is presently a Senior Fellow with Centre for Land Warfare Studies. Col MK Mandanna SM (Retd). He was commissioned and commanded the 5th Battalion (Napiers) Rajputana Rifles. He was BM 72 Infantry Brigade in Sri Lanka and Directing Staff at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. Post retirement, he has been the Former ED, Security Intelligence Services Col Atul Kochhar (Retd). He is from 1 JAK LI and served for 22 years in insurgency affected areas. He has a diploma in Sinhala language. Currently, he is involved in restoring the legacy of Indian soldiers in Sri Lanka for Operation Pawan and is working to publish the book ‘Valiant Deeds Undying Memories’, an anthology of experiences of Veterans of IPKF.
